Introduction

The Aquatic Therapy Class aims to support patients with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions that are not able to tolerate land-based exercise due to high levels of pain or a significant restriction in joint movement.

What to expect

This is a physical, water-based exercise rehabilitation group. It will consist of up to 15 people, from varying musculoskeletal conditions. The class will be led by 2 clinicians who will monitor and guide you through the exercise to support your recovery. We would like you to attend 4 sessions over 4 consecutive weeks. It is important to maintain a level of physical activity throughout the rest of the week and once your treatment has finished.

What will I need?

  • Wear a swimming costume or swimming trunks.
  • Wear a swimming hat (if applicable)
  • You will have access to the swimming pool showers and will need to bring your own shower accessories/wash.
  • Bring a towel.

The importance of being active

NHS guidleines recommend the following:

  • 150mins moderate intensity exercise a week
  • 30mins x 5 = Weekly recommended activity
  • Moderate intensity = any exercise that elevates the heart/ breathing rate to a point where you can still hold a conversation 75mins of intense exercise a week
  • 15mins x 5 = Weekly recommended activity
  • Intense exercise = any exercise that elevates heart rate
