London, Bromley and Crystal Palace Vestibular Physiotherapy: Dizziness and vertigo caused by BPPV (Benign, Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) can be treated with the Epley manoeuvre by Vestibular Physiotherapists

Are you looking for treatment for dizziness or vertigo in South East London ? (Crystal Palace, Bromley, Orpington and Mottingham)

Dizziness, vertigo and balance problems may stem from a dysfunction with your inner ears, eyes and joints working together. We call this the Vestibular system. Some of our physiotherapists have specialist training to manage problems of the vestibular system.

BPPV is a common vestibular condition. It is caused due to small particles of calcium carbonate crystals building up and inadvertently getting into the inner ear canals. These crystals interfere with messages that are sent to the brain about head movements. Because the messages do not correspond with what the eyes and joints are telling the brain, a spinning sensation/vertigo is experienced for a few seconds up to a minute.

The Epley manoeuvre is effective in treating the most common form of BPPV, with a high success rate.

Additional conditions that can be treated effectively with Vestibular rehabilitation include:

  • Labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis
  • Vestibular hypofunction
  • Cervicogenic dizziness
  • Dizziness post-concussion
  • Age related dizziness and imbalance
  • Vestibular migraine
  • Meniere’s

The main symptoms that most people experience are dizziness, vertigo, nausea, unsteadiness/poor balance, feeling lightheaded, reduced confidence, inactivity and a loss of independence.

The benefits of seeking early intervention with Vestibular rehabilitation delivered by a physio include:

  • Specific techniques to treat symptoms for BPPV
  • Eye and head movement exercises to promote compensation which helps improve dizziness symptoms
  • Exercises to improve standing balance
  • Education and advice on activities of daily living to improve confidence
  • Advice on falls prevention
